SOCRATES
SOCRATES is the European Unions Programme embracing all educational levels from primary school to university to life long learning. It was introduced with the aim of increasing international cooperation in the field of education, improving the quality of teaching and enhancing educational offers of schools and institutions.
The Programme has been designed to:
SOCRATES Programme was introduced in EU countries and was in operation from 1995 to 1999. Then it was extended as SOCRATES II for the years 2000-2006.
Currently there are 31 European states in the Programme:
Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Spain, Holland, Ireland, Iceland, Lichtenstein, Luxembourg, Lithuania, Latvia, Malta, Germany, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Turkey, Hungary, Great Britain, Italy.
Apart from supporting international cooperation between educational institutions in Europe SOCRATES propagates: life long learning, language teaching and learning, implementing new methods and educational resources as well as international exchanges of students and teaching staff.
In the SOCRATES Programme there are eight Actions:
· ERASMUS- for Higher Education
· COMENIUS- for Primary and Secondary Education
· LINGUA- promotion of language teaching and learning
· MINERVA- promotion of Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in education
· GRUNDTVIG- promotion of life long learning
· EURYDICE- institutional network for gathering, processing and circulating reliable and readily comparable information on education systems and policies
· ARION- organization of study visits for education specialists and decision makers
· NARIC- recognition of Higher Education
